Sally Horrox, formerly of The FA, was a key figure in the creation of the new Women’s Super League a decade ago this month when plans were first made public for a new licensed league, the first in football, and she recalls how a six-week feasibility study turned into a legacy that has seen the league go strength to strength, but with several major bumps along the way.

Y Sport at the #EqualitySummit during the FIFA Women's World Cup 2019 in France

I was so pleased to be invited to take part in a very timely and fantastic panel at the #EqualitySummit during the FIFA Women's World Cup 2019 in France, discussing professionalisation, commercialisation, and the opportunity and challenge in women’s football. We had an exceptional panel of brilliant leaders in football: Tatjana Haenni - Head of Women's Football, Swiss Football Association, Becca Roux - Executive Director for the USWNT Players Association, and Amanda Vandervort - former VP of Fan Engagement at Major League Soccer.

Women’s Football: Attributing Value Matters

Finally, in 2019, we can now say, without hesitation that Women’s Football has established itself as a valuable commercial property in its own right, distinct from the men’s game, with increased interest, coverage, attendance, profile and commercial partners. We’re delighed to have played our own small part in this, from bringing together the first major women’s sport partnership between SSE and The FA in 2015 for the Women’s FA Cup, to working with UEFA across Europe to help National Associations build on this interest, participation and commercial growth. It’s been a great journey!
